Dog Vitamins For The Health Of Your Pet

By Bernadette Mendoza

To ensure the maximum health and happiness of your beloved pet, you might want to consider dog vitamins to give him the vitamins that are likely to be missing from the average canine diet. Even the best quality commercial dog food won't have everything he needs to stay optimally healthy, so supplementation is needed to fill in the gaps. Senior dogs, puppies, as well as active, adult dogs can benefit from adding some good quality vitamins and minerals to their diets.

Supplements for dogs come in several different formulas, but the most commonly available are made for joint health, digestive health and the multivitamins that can cover overall health and wellness issues in most dogs.

Most of the commercial dog foods available contain by-products that can cause health problems such as cancers, arthritis, premature aging, and heart disease, among others. These by-products can make oxygen molecules become unstable in the animal's body, causing free radicals, which make it easier for the more harmful molecules to replicate, such as cancers.

Just like in supplements meant for humans, vitamins for dogs are not all the same, so be sure to read the label. To aide in stomach and nervous system functioning, make sure it contains a B complex, which will also help in keeping your dog's skin, coat and eyes healthy. Vitamin A is needed to help the immune system to destroy possible cancer-causing agents and to aide in vision health and skeletal growth throughout the animal's body.

Another essential element is Vitamin C. It helps to balance out the immune system, to prevent the inhibition of the cell growth and any tissue repair when needed. Vitamin E is also needed for a healthy immune system, as a further fighter of the negative free radicals that can invade the body.

Older or larger dogs, especially may need supplements to aide in their joint health. Just as in their human counterparts, dogs can get arthritis, too. Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) and Vitamin C are essential ingredients to help battle the debilitating effects of arthritis in dogs.

Watch out for dog vitamins that may contain too many fillers like clays, sugars or corn syrup type products. These may be harmful and are a waste of money. Always read the instructions and dosage information to ensure you are giving the proper amount and doing it correctly, and combined with good nutrition and proper exercise, your pet can be the healthiest it can possibly be.
