Options for Your Hose Reel

By Bobby Cisco

You may need a hose reel if your residence has an outdoor space like lawn or a garden. Having one will be of help for your gardening needs and in cleaning up your little pathways.

But shopping for a good hose reel can be a challenge. However, as long as you have made up your mind to buy one, there is a huge array of options for your hose reel in any hardware or gardening store in your vicinity or online. It is quite helpful to know the difference between types before you go out and purchase one.

Aside from being an improper fit, a hose reel may also have the wrong features. Reels for water hoses used in sheds for example are different from those used in gardens. Garden reels need to have large wheels so they don't get stuck in gravel or mud tracks. Reels for garden hoses should also ideally have an automatic retracting function. You don't want to get one with a manual crank if you don't want to soil your fingers over a mud stained hose.

For those who have a vast area in mind, the cart type would be the better option. This is because the hose may not be capable of reaching across the entire property, and may have to be brought along in a rolling cart in order to do so. Even cart reels have different options within the type, all with their own special features designed to cater to your particular needs.

You can't always trust water hose reel information online. Many websites are run by reel manufacturers or their affiliates. If you want to find unbiased opinions about reel brands, you should look for rating and review sites. These contain reviews by real users so you can quickly see the pros and cons of a reel brand. Many of these review sites also offer links and options for buying a reel directly from a dealer so you don't have to physically visit a shop just to get a reel.

The material used for the frame of the cart-type reel also matters. If you are putting your reel to heavy duty use, a steel frame is recommended because it is more durable. If you are limited to home use and use your hose reel on an average basis, the plastic frame will do fine. This may be less durable but not too much so because new models are usually made of tough resin. Just make sure to choose a good brand. The plastic type is also much cheaper than the steel type.

You might also want to check a reel brand for extra features. You may prefer one with padded handles, an anti tip mechanism, exterior casing, automatic reeling, tool trays and more.

Although a hose reel does not usually come up on one's list of household priorities, it is a very useful tool for those people who are maintaining yards or lawns. It keeps your outdoors organized and clean, making it an efficient tool for any serious gardener.
