By Amanda Best

The history of the bloodhound breed goes back for more than a thousand years. Both ancient and modern owners describe them as noble, gentle, patient and lovable dogs.

This breed is known for their love of long hikes as they chase after a scent and they have been known to chase a scent for miles and miles until they reach the end of the trail. In fact, once a Bloodhound has honed in on a particular scent they seem to lose their capacity for hearing so a leash is essential, so is a yard that is fenced in.

Few dogs of the Bloodhound breed are used for hunting nowadays, a large number fo them being trained and used to track and save missing people. They have an incomparable ability to track the human scent, so they are also used by police forces in the apprehending of criminals. The dogs of the Bloodhound dog are able to lock onto a scent from a very young age, as little as four days in fact. They are extremely useful in tracking persons into a city, as they are able to follow a human scent even on surfaces like asphalt or concrete. Due to the fact that the Bloodhound is so good at tracking a human scent they are even considered reliable in a court of law. In the history of criminal law, one particular bloodhound is mentioned as having tracked over six hundred criminals, all of them arrested and convicted in a court of law.

As they have powerful bodies, drooping eyelids and big droopy ears, the dogs of the Bloodhound breed look very interesting. The owners of Bloodhound dogs need to ensure lot of space and exercise to their large and active companion. Of course, this breed requires more than exercise. They will need mental stimulation as well. When the dog is bored, difficult times arise for its owner. If they don't have any job to do, they will chew things, howl and act destructive. Owners need to take care if children or elderly and infirm people are around because these dogs love to gambol and play and they can get rather rambunctious from time to time.

Their owners need to be both patient and firm while training this intelligent and independent dog. The new owners should know that the training of these dogs will last for a few years, as they can take longer than most other breeds to mature. During training you need to show them you are the boss as they have this propensity to dash off on any scent trail. Professional training can be a good idea as these dogs are also known for being rather manipulative and stubborn when they want to be. For many fans of this breed this is just another engaging quality of these dogs.
