What Good Samurai Swords Are

By Lindsey Herring

Indeed, people can grow crazy about their pastimes; some have even went as far as collecting ancient weapons. Samurai swords are no exception in this case, knowing how these blades were popularly used by legendary figures in Japanese war.

Warriors often ride their horses when they are in the battlefield and draw their sword out of a wooden scabbard called saya of which the opening is made with a buffalo ring. This prevents the splitting of the wooden case due to constant pressure from removing and returning the material.

Samurais believe that their instruments have spirits that live within them; thus, naming them is not a rare occasion in ancient Japan. The first of the weapons were straight bladed and single edge but due to warriors opting for more precise hits and easier mounting, they have switched to what has become now the famous form, the curved blades.

These materials come in three main forms namely the Katana, Wakizashi and the Tanto. The first one is the longest of the three types which measures up to 24 inches in length while the second one measures from 12 to 24 inches long. Tanto is a small knife utilized for the same purpose as Wakizashi. The shoguns carried with them Katana and Wakizashi, providing them the license to kill any outlaw.

People have to be particular with choosing a sword as this is a very priceless historical item. For maximum strength, choosing pure steel as its component would be necessary. The forging should also have been done in a sophisticated manner, just like the ancient weapons have been. A heating treating for the edges known as hamon should be done to guarantee the right polish.

Choosing the design and the shape of the material are always crucial points to consider. In order to feel what ancient warriors felt in their battles, it would be much better to get hold of blades that resemble the original ones in the past. This is what makes the kill extremely precise, a highly important element any sword used by a warrior should have.

For optimum quality, testing the materials out would be necessary. Ancient smiths used to test on corpse of criminals by determining whether small and large bones can be cut by the material. Quite creepy but this is what the blades were used for in the ancient times.

To guarantee maximum attention to the samurai swords, purchasers have to make sure the sellers provide warranties for their materials. Nevertheless, for satisfaction to be achieved by clients, shops have to have proper policies regarding returns and refunds.
