Why Samurai Swords Are Legendary

By Lindsey Herring

History has played a major role on how people have formed the present society. Particularly, many are into knowing more about the weaponry of the ancient times which does not exempt the mystifying samurai swords that Japan had for its warriors. The country's famous military dictators used to have them, making them big figures in history.

Warriors often ride their horses when they are in the battlefield and draw their sword out of a wooden scabbard called saya of which the opening is made with a buffalo ring. This prevents the splitting of the wooden case due to constant pressure from removing and returning the material.

Blades were treated like high beings; they were even provided names as samurais believed their blade companions to have spirits. The original straight bladed materials have evolved into the famous curved ones in the 8th century due to the easiness it provides during mounting and hitting targets.

Three types are identified for the blades used by Samurais, and these are Tanto, Wakizashi and Katana. The first form was the shortest; it was just actually a knife used for close contact cutting, almost the same as Wakizashi of which the length was only 12 to 24 inches. On the other hand, Katana was the longest of the types, measuring up to 24 inches in length.

Owing to their historical value, people should buy blades that are of good quality only. Choosing pure steel against any material would guarantee strength of the sword and the way it is forged should be just like how ancients weapons had been. A heating treatment called hamon ensures the sword maintains it luster and shine despite abuses in battle.

For a more sophisticated feel, clients might as well be particular with the design of the blades they are going to buy. They should look as close as original blades to guarantee the best connection between the sword and the user himself.

For optimum quality, testing the materials out would be necessary. Ancient smiths used to test on corpse of criminals by determining whether small and large bones can be cut by the material. Quite creepy but this is what the blades were used for in the ancient times.

To guarantee maximum attention to the samurai swords, purchasers have to make sure the sellers provide warranties for their materials. Nevertheless, for satisfaction to be achieved by clients, shops have to have proper policies regarding returns and refunds.
