Major Characteristics Of Wooden Flooring

By Jim Jones

The characteristics of hardwood flooring are drawn from the characteristics of natural wood. This is because there are very few processes that are performed on wood before it can be use on floors. Just as natural wood has grains, knots and color, so do wooden floors. However, there are other characteristics apart from the very obvious.

Because wood is a natural material, there are usually color variations in floors that are made from it. There will be different colors of stains ranging from very dark ones to light ones. It all depends on specific conditions under which the wood grew and the creativity of the expert who made the floor.

Durability is the other characteristic. Wooden materials are known to be long lasting. However, such things as the conditions under which they are used and the specific specie of tree determine the durability.

It therefore does not mean that your flooring will not dent. Depending on the conditions under which the floors are used, denting can occur. The things that can lead to denting include dropping of heavy materials on the floors, placing heavy furniture and appliances and just placing rough materials on it.

The smooth edges that are usually found on wooden floors prevent them from chipping and splintering. This is because the smooth edges make the boards that make up the floor to fit tightly. However, if you expose the floor to harsh conditions, the smooth edges will be lost and splintering will be inevitable.

Another well known characteristic of wooden floors is that they are flat. Although there may be slight variations from board to board, they are usually not big enough to cause discomfort. If used in the right way, such floors can maintain their perfectly flat shape for long. They also do not need replacement very often.
