Making Your Own Dog Food: The Healthiest Kind of Dog Food

By Paul Bridgeman

Would you like to feed your dog natural and fresh recipes that you have loving prepared from your own home!? It slowly becoming common knowledge amongst dog owners that home made dog is the healthiest and best kind of food you can give you beloved friend. Despite the shiny and carefully worded commercial ads from large brand manufacturers, it will shock many owners to learn of the alarming ingredients being so many familiar packaging! A lot of which can attribute to many modern day illnesses

Some disturbing facts about dog food that comes in cans and bags should come to light for dog owners to know about. One of the main preservatives used in dog food is ethoxyquin, which is a know carcinogen. It doesn't have to be listed on the nutrition label to actually be in the package. Fats are used to make the appearance of pet food more appetizing, but they don't have any control over companies that they obtain fats from, and these companies could use ethoxysquin in their products. Pet food companies don't have to list this ingredient, because they aren't the ones adding the ethoxyquin to the fat they put in their products, and this is therefore legal for them to leave off the nutrition label. Another chemical is propylene glycol, an additive used to keep the ingredients in dog foods and treats from falling apart. Propylene glycol has been attributed recently to causing cancer in cats. Because of this discovery, cat foods and treats no longer use it in their products. But, dog foods and treats have yet to stop using it.

One of the major benefits of creating your own home made dog food is that you know exactly what ingredients are going into the dish. Other equally important advantages include being able to monitor the portion sizes being eaten and the protein fats levels and carbohydrates within each recipe. Many healthy foods like bananas, honey, peanut butter, vegetables, apples, and pumpkins can all be found in dog food recipes. Many other recipes also contain fresh meats like beef, chicken, turkey, and fish such as tuna and halibut.

Carefully building each recipe and avoiding just feeding them scraps will also ensure no harmful foods being consumed. One thing I certainly didn't know was just how many human foods are actually toxic to dogs. One less commonly know food is avocados which contains a chemical called persin which can cause vomiting and loose tools. Please check out another of my recent post for more info on toxic dog food.

There are many other benefits to feeding your dog a healthy home-made diet. Some dogs are diagnosed with a health condition and require a special diet, making home-made meals a perfect option. Other dogs are in training for competitions and need more protein or calories than the commercial dog foods can provide. Or maybe your dog is allergic to most commercial dog food brands, or they are unable to fully digest them. But for most people, the decision to feed their dogs fresh, home-made dog food is made when they realize that exposing their dog to chemicals such as humectants, preservatives, and artificial flavoring found in commercial dog foods poses too great of a health risk to their faithful companion.
