Some Common Causes Of Infertility In Both Men And Women

By Dr. John Westerford

If a couple has been trying to get pregnant for a year and have not succeeded, you can say that they have an infertility problem. For women above 35 years of age, the typical period is usually around six months of attempting to get pregnant without success. Not being able to carry a pregnancy to full term is another definition.

Ten percent of US women between 15 and 44 either can't conceive, or can't carry a pregnancy to term. Contrary to popular opinion, infertility isn't just a female issue. Many factors that affect both men and women cause this condition.
In men, a wide array of things can cause infertility. Sperm count can be reduced due to a condition called varicocele that affects the testicles due to enlarged veins which cause overheating. An additional reason is if a man has a reproductive system that has been injured or damaged. Any damage could significantly reduce the sperm flow or interfere so much it causes a blockage. Causes for infertility may be due to genetic factors but this is not always the case. Cystic fibrosis is one example of this.

Ovulation related issues can lead to female infertility. Woman suffering from these types of conditions are oftentimes not able to produce eggs that they need to conceive. A female will typically realize that she has problems ovulating when her periods are not regular or she doesn't menstruate at all. Ovulation problems may be the result of PCOS, which causes a hormonal imbalance throughout the entire reproductive system. Women may stop ovulating before age 40 due to primary ovarian insufficiency. Infertility can also be caused by fibroids growing in the uterus and problems with the fallopian tubes, among other things.

At a reproductive center you can find many different types of infertility treatments. One of the reproductive technologies, in vitro fertilization, involves fertilization outside of the woman's body instead of inside. Many medical terms are taken from Latin, since Vitro means glass you may have heard it being referred to as fertilization in a glass. It involves a laboratory procedure where sperm is introduced to an unfertilized egg inside a petri dish for fertilization. Other methods include gamete intrafallopian transfer or GIFT in which the eggs and sperm are directly transferred into the woman's fallopian tubes for internal fertilization. A couple with fertility problems can also decide to use the surrogacy option where another woman decides to bear the pregnancy on their behalf.
