The Fun World Of Shopping With Newborns

By Phillip O. Flanagan

In case you were curious, children are expensive. By high-priced, I mean extremely expensive. The amount that we have spent so far on our little 14 month old is a lot higher than anything I imagined. I'm not whining, just so you know. It has forced me reconsider my shopping strategy. We usually only buy the lesser-known brands and also clip out a lot of Babies R Us coupons. Regrettably though, Mom and Dad do understand brand names.

We try not too spoil our little one, but it is hard. We rarely buy the highest quality items for ourselves, but for our daughter we always do. Perhaps this is why so many parents always converse about how expensive children are. There is no chance that we are the lone family spending a lot on gifts.
It is a secret joy of ours to go out to the store and stroll around watching the other parents with their children. It is a very social experience for us. Our daughter won't stop trying to speak to the other kids. She doesn't really speak yet, but she will still give it her all. Every other couple seems seem to be in such marvelous spirits. We get a little surprised actually. I wonder how they do it, if they are getting about the same amount of sleep as us, which isn't much. You would almost assume everyone would be in really cranky moods and more frustrated than a colic baby. But, it looks like every person is feeling pleasant, peppy, and is excitedly telling tales of their child's life.

It is exciting to shop with our little one. I always sort of hated heading out to the store before. It had always been just another thing to check off before I could kick off my shoes and take it easy. While now it is kind of like going to fiesta for new parents. It's actually a lot of fun. It probably has to do with the quality time we get with our girl doing an activity that is amusing.

She still experiences everything with wonder and delight. We appreciate that she is on her path to growing older. We usually hear other parent's, including our own, telling us to enjoy it now because before you know it they are all grown up. I think I'm just going to take it a day at a time. I'm in no hurry for our daughter to grow out of her youth.
