A Starter Course to Making a Beaded Necklace

By Siffion Quaid

Think Out Your Design Plan

Put some thought into how you want the necklace to look, following beading instructions from a kit takes this creative element away from you but if you're doing your own pattern put some thought into it. Maybe use a bead board to try out various combos. If you find a favourite design that you like and wish to recreate it over again, making it will be simple, you are able to add a clasp on one end and slide the beads on it'll be second nature and the time it takes to construct the necklace will be no time whatsoever.

Constructing a Symmetrical Necklace

A great way to make a symmetrical necklace (same design on both halves of the necklace) is to start with the center bead. Thread this first then work your way to the end using the remainder of the beads in order you've planned, remake this process on the other half of the necklace. This way you also will be able to see how many beads are needed without having to form almost all of the necklace before having to make changes.

To avoid beads sliding off when stringing the first part of the necklace I would like to suggest perhaps securing the central bead first of all, if you plan on having clamp beads on either side of the central bead then good, if not then using sticky tape would do. Also be sure to measure more out the quantity of wire to use, best to have too much than not enough.

- Cut the Wire by about 6 inches more than the planned size to allow for over spill.

- Add a crimp bead and then part of the clasp, pull the wire tight then flatten the crimp bead.

- Thread your beads as per your planned design.

- Secure the rest of the clasp following the same instruction in point two, make sure it is pulled taut before flattening the crimp bead.

There you have it your first beaded necklace. Making jewelry is an especially gratifying and creative process; it is also so easy to learn. The most crucial thing to remember when making your necklace is to have a laugh.
