There are more than 800 different species of these crabs according to hermit crab info. It has, however, also been reported that the number of species exceeds 1100. Most live in the oceans or seas but some live on land.

These creatures were named hermit as it was thought they live on their own. This is inaccurate as they do congregate together and are often seen climbing over each other or even sleeping on top of each other. Some species are more aggressive than others.

Water and food must be made available but it is necessary to ensure smaller crabs do not drown in drinking bowls. This can be avoided by placing small pebbles or a sponge in the drinking container to enable small crabs to walk out if they should fall in.
