Lodge Style Bedding Brings A Rustic Style Into The Bedroom

By Rebecca McKeich

The seemingly endless selection of different styles of bedding makes it possible to create a certain look in a room that can be far removed from the original design of the house. Lodge bedding is a homespun look that is suitable for any room but for those who love the outdoors, hiking, kayaking and forest animals, this style would be the perfect match with that type of personality.

The outdoor theme helps to establish the cozy ruggedness of log cabins that families stayed in during the summer months. Animal themes such as black bears, moose and deer were depicted on wallpaper and various souvenirs decorated the room. Bedspreads were usually plaid blankets that were reminiscent of the lumberjack coats.

As soon as manufacturers started printing images on sheets, the choices in bedding motifs multiplied. Animals can be found on sheets, pillow cases, shams, bed spreads and comforters. More wildlife can be added to a room than ever before. It is easy to add too many so that the room will feel too busy so a word of caution to keep your lodge style bedding simple.

Experienced interior decorators warn others that less is more. Once the theme is known then it must be decided what will be built around it. For hunters perhaps a moose, bear or dear. Motif would be suitable. Layers of warm browns or greens would work well with the animals.

The animal of choice can be found on the pillows or bed skirt. The rest of the bedding should be left free of animals. Two or three shades of color can be incorporated into the animal-free items. The animals can also be predominant on the comforter and the pillows and sheets left plain or in a lumberjack plaid.

Accessorizing is also possible. Table lamps, posters and rustic furniture works together with the decorated bed. Furniture can be constructed of hickory, pine and log furniture. A hickory rocking chair might just make the perfect finishing touch for the bedroom. A little table lamp with a bear base would finalize the lighting.

Handmade quilts add the personal touch to lodge bedding. Fewer people make them since they are quite time consuming to produce by hand. If skillfully made, these become heirloom pieces that fetch a high price in antique shops. The quilt is usually colorful and busy so the bedding should be more simple with solid colors rather than lots of animal prints.

Flannel sheets will provide warmth and coziness in the winter. The heat that the body creates will be kept insulated by flannel. Flannel pajamas have the same effect.
