Manchester`s Industrial Heritage

By Jack Lemon

The Industrial Revolution in Britain was the kick start for many British towns, turning them into the major cities we see today. Manchester was a forerunner for many different technologies and as a result is now one of the most significant cities in the country. It has a rich history and diverse culture, making it a hugely popular UK tourist destination. There are many different types of accommodation available in Manchester if you are thinking of a trip to this incredible city, from hotel rooms to the serviced apartments Manchester has scattered across the city, all keeping you in the thick of the vibrant and exciting hub of the city.

Situated in the South-Central part of Northern England, Manchester was originally the site of a Roman fort established in 79 AD, but the city began to expand into what it is today during the early 19th Century, when the city experiences its first industry boom. Manchester is a strange city, being almost smack bang in the centre of the English countryside. Surrounded by plains and a mountain range, there is as much to see in the Greater Manchester area as there is in the city itself. During the Industrial Revolution of Queen Victoria's reign, Manchester became the world's first industrial city when it was granted city status in 1853 because of the textile industry that had flourished here.

As the industrial work disappeared during the 1980's, the major cities in the UK became much more retail and customer service based, with industries such as financial and retail becoming dominant. As a result these cities have now become major attractions for tourists and UK residents alike. Manchester is one such city. With a rich history and multicultural society, it now has one of the most talked about nightlife and many sights and attractions to capture the imaginations of all those who visit.

Long after the town of Manchester had leapt up around the Roman Fort, the inner city suburb of Ancoats was built on the same site. It is one of the most important Industrial Heritage sites in the city, with a vast complex of mills and workshops that pose as a reminder of times gone by. This area was once known as the 'workshop of the world' and is home to Sanitary Street, a road of workers houses purpose built to be close to the mills, but also hygienic because of the sewage system put in place. This area is easily accessible from the serviced short stay apartments dotted across Manchester and is an essential part of the city's history.

If you are looking for a comfortable and welcoming stay in Manchester, within easy reach of the city centre, serviced short stay apartments are an excellent alternative to hotels. Castlefield is one area that is close to the various self service apartments Manchester has on offer, but is also an area that could almost detail the history of the city for visitors. Castlefield is home to many firsts, including the 1761 Bridgewater Canal, which was the first real canal system ever seen in any country in the world. It was also given the world's first passenger railway that ran from Manchester to Liverpool in 1830.

One of the most iconic places in the wider area of Manchester is probably Peel Tower. The tower stands in Holcombe Hill in Ramsbottom and was erected as a tribute to the founder of the Metropolitan Police Force, Sir Robert Peel, who also served as prime minister twice, during the 19th Century. After a steep climb to the top of the hill, visitors are rewarded with stunning views of the Greater Manchester area. The 1852 memorial is a fantastic example of the city's history and also allows for tourists to enjoy the village of Ramsbottom and the East Lancashire Railway.

The best thing about serviced apartments Manchester has to offer is the option to explore some of the Greater Manchester area. If you are looking for a day outside the city to enjoy some of the sights of the Greater Manchester area, Bolton's Museum is one place to go. It gives an insight into the industry that spread outside the city of Manchester and allows visitors to experience the friendly hospitality of the people of Lancashire. That's not all however, as the museum also features an incredible aquarium which has an amazing display of fish from all over the world. It is the only aquarium of its kind in the Greater Manchester Area.

When the night falls in Manchester, the streets come alive with people of all ages looking for fine food, good bars and excellent clubbing opportunities. Many of the serviced apartments Manchester has on offer are in close proximity to the famously diverse and vibrant nightlife. Whether you are looking for real ale pubs, jazz and blues clubs or the more commercial nightclubs, there is something going on every night to suit all tastes, all partying until the early hours of the morning.
