A Starter Course to Making a Beaded Necklace

By Siffion Quaid

Think Out Your Design Plan

Put some thought into how you would like the necklace to look, following beading instructions from a kit takes this creative part away from you but if you're doing your own invention put some thought into it. Use a bead board to try out several mixtures. If you find a favorite design that you like and feel you want to recreate it over again, constructing it will be easy, you are able to add a clasp on one end and place the beads on it's going to be second nature and the time it uses to assemble the necklace will be no time whatsoever.

Creating a Symmetrical Necklace

A good way to make a symmetrical necklace (same design on both halves of the necklace) is to begin with the middle bead. Thread this first then work your way to the end using the rest of the beads in order you have planned, repeat this process on the other side of the necklace. This way you will be able to gauge how many beads are required while not having to construct the majority of the necklace before having to make readjustments.

To avoid beads dropping off when stringing the 1st half of the necklace I would like to recommend perhaps securing the center bead first off, if you are planning on having clamp beads on both sides of the center bead then excellent, if not then using scotch tape would suffice. Also be sure to overestimate the length of wire to use, best to have too much than not enough.

- Cut the Wire by about 6 inches more than the planned size to allow for over spill.

- Insert a crimp bead and then part of the clasp, pull the wire taut then flatten out the crimp bead.

- Thread your beads as per your pre planned design.

- Secure the rest of the clasp following the as instructed in point two, make sure it is pulled taut before flattening the crimp bead.

There you have it your first beaded necklace. Making jewellery is a very satisfying and creative pursuit; it's also very easy to pick up. The most important thing to keep in mind when making your necklace is to have fun.
