College Days...Building A Foundation For Your Life

By Amanda Greene

Going to college can be an exciting time in the life of a person. After all, there's no other point in life that's so pivotal. It's the end of the child years and the start of adulthood and it is a time filled with excitement and changes.

Most students hit a few bumps as they go but over time they find themselves in the grown up world ready to face the challenges of adult life. At first of course, there will be issues to deal with such as setting up the college dorm room, dealing with living with a non-family member for the first time in life, and with of course the juggling of personal finances that goes along with becoming an adult.

It's a wonderful time and most college freshman know that when life in the real world becomes to challenging that they will be able to head home for a weekend of home-cooking and a shoulder to cry on. This provides them with the steadiness they need to thrust forward and most families find that the first 6 months to a year the student returns home frequently but when they become more established in their own life and more settled, that they require fewer and fewer visits back to the old homestead.

Adjusting to college life is a challenge because it requires the child to become an adult. While most have the safety net of a loving and supportive family they know that making this new environment work is part of their transition to becoming an adult. Many learn their lessons the hard way by drinking and partying too much and failing a couple of courses but there are also a large number of students who take the experience seriously and look to use it as one to learn from and to grow on. people that take it seriously must be careful not to take it too seriously however, because it is very important find balance and many first time college students who are extremely serious struggle with health issues during their first semester as a result of increased amount of pressure and stress.

From a parents perspective it can be difficult to let your child head off to college and to either succeed or fall flat on their face. Either way, however, it is likely that one way or another over time they will become a productive and well-adjusted adult. This process just takes a little bit longer for some than for others.
