Decorating Ideas That Save Money

By Amber Siegle

Once upon a time decorating one's home was as simple as picking up the phone and calling a professional decorator. This is still something that some people do. Most of us, sadly, see decorating as being too expensive. How many people in your life have homes that they haven't "bothered" to decorate their homes because they aren't able to afford fancy decorating items? Thankfully there are plenty of budget friendly ways that you can put a personal touch on your home. These are all things that you can do in your spare time and with very little money.

Thrift stores can be quite helpful. Saving money is the name of the game at thrift stores and second hand stores-especially for people with big projects like home decoration. The trick to finding great stuff in thrift stores is learning to see the beauty that is in each item on the shelves. Most thrift store finds only need a little "tlc" and they can quickly become beautiful decorative items. All you need is some patience and even the funniest looking clothes on the racks can be turned into things of beauty for your home. Thrift stores in affluent neighborhoods are filled with items that are in great shape.

The internet is great for decorators. Creators of all stripes are trying to use the internet to sell the things they make. Etsy is a very popular website for artists who want to sell their work and for people who are trying to decorate their homes inexepensively. Many artists upload their work for free to community sites like Flickr where you can look through their portfolios for free. You can also purchase decorative art through artist's personal websites. There are great and affordable deals all over the world wide web-you don't have to stay with the traditional sites like Ebay or Amazon.

You can also look at the classified section in your newspaper or at the Craigslist website for your local area to find great decorating deals. Lots of people use these places to sell decorative items for the home. Some simple surfing could you net you enough to decorate your whole home in just a matter of a few hours. You could even save time by placing your own ad listing the types of decorative items you are looking for. This way, instead of spending a ton of time searching for each item, the sellers will come to you. Remember to be careful! It is a good idea to thoroughly inspect each item you want to buy before actually handing over cash for it.

It's likely that you own plenty of decorative items that were given to you as gifts that you choose not to display. Everybody has a few decorative items shoved into closets and drawers that only come out when the giver comes over. Is it possible to use them for decoration full time? You don't have to keep them on display for ever and ever but they can be decorative while you save up for other pieces that you like. Another bonus to this plan is that you won't have to frantically hunt through your home for that statue your mother in law gave you the next time she calls to say that she's on her way over! There is no law that says home decorating has to be an expensive endeavor. You don't have to spend a lot of time doing it. You should have fun with your decorating project! When a home decorating project takes up all of your time, empties your bank account and causes you a lot of stress it is harder to enjoy the finished project.
