By Alfie Davis

Turkey is a country with an amazing history and an even more amazing culture. Throughout the year this culture and history is shared with the country's citizens but also people from all around the world who visit to enjoy a number of annual festivals. Turkey is a country which is extremely supportive of the creative arts and this is shown by the number of festivals each year for people to showcase their creative talents.
The annual Istanbul film festival is organised by the Istanbul foundation for culture and arts and takes over cinemas in Istanbul every April. The festival encourages film makers from Turkey to show their films and to help the growth of the Turkish film industry. Cinema enthusiasts travel from around the world to the festival to see the latest up and coming directors, actors and producers and to art house films.

Istanbul isn't just home to the film festival though as it also hosts festivals for music, theatre and jazz each year too. The Jazz festival lasts alone for 18 days and has a number of different performances and concerts from amateur and professional musicians. In 2011 the concert had a tribute to the great Miles Davis who is an icon to many Jazz musicians.

It isn't just in Istanbul where major festivals take place though and Ankara is host to its own International film and music festivals. These festivals again encourage Turkish creative individuals and groups to produce films and music and the best at the festivals are rewarded with a number of awards and other things to help them take their career to the next step. These festivals highlight how supportive Turkey is of its creative arts and its culture.

Turkey's population have very strong religious beliefs and most of them are Islamic. Because of these beliefs, they take Islamic holidays very seriously and during these times, most people close their businesses and spend time with their families instead. Tourism is affected in these times but they are very important to the Turkish people. The longest of these religious holidays is Kurban Bayrami which only lasts for five days.
