What Are Bay Windows Used For

By Adriana Noton

When looking at the older Victorian architecture the modern day onlooker might wonder what are bay windows needed for. They appear architecturally interesting but they will be more expensive than those that do not project outwards. The bay will add more light and floor area which is called the bay. The angles of the bay are selected from 90, to 135 to 150 degrees so their are many interesting possibilities for creating an interesting niche.

The bay window grew quickly in popularity in the 1870s at the height of the Victorian era in the UK. They created the illusion that little spaces had more room by allowing more light to enter as well as my creating some additional space. The ornate exterior architecture added a distinctive look to the building and because of this it is being incorporated into buildings today too.

The popularity of the bay window was not limited to the UK or Europe. In the US too in cities such as San Francisco, the bay window became immensely popular. They usually project out about two to three feet from the wall. A problem developed as a result of this when they intruded onto the public space above public streets. City ordinances were created to control where these windows would be permitted to be built.

The older bay windows were very ornate with styles such as neoclassic Italianate, Edwardian and Mission as some of the offshoots. Today's windows are more austere and simple in design and somewhat less imaginative according to some experts. The ideas from the past nonetheless still help to inspire the designers of the future.

Today's newer apartment buildings duplicate Victorian architecture but not very successfully. They often lack the imagination that the craftsmen of the past were able to integrate into their work.

The bay window still has an important role to play in modern architecture. They can accommodate greenhouses and hot tubs just to name a few examples. The imagination is the limit when it comes to creating new living spaces.

Living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms have all benefited from the addition of these multi angled panes. Three or more are used for the basic bay and four or more are used to create a curve. The result is a multi-view experience that also allows for extra counter, floor and light space.

Suburban homes have also benefited from the bay. The cramped homes of the 1950s and 1940s have been given a face lift with the addition of the bay window. They have been opened up and transformed to delightful living spaces complemented with skylights and other design innovations.

When people ask what are bay windows used for homeowners who have incorporated these into their buildings can just open the door and let them experience the rooms. They serve to provide a more spacious living experience inside the home while adding architectural detail to the outside. Future designs will continue to incorporate the bay window into their plans.
