When you were a kid, you may have secretly used a baby monitor to listen in on your neighbor's telephone conversations. However, if you were to review baby monitors today, you would find that they can do much more than simply transmit or pick up sounds. Some systems even have video monitoring. Deciding on which monitoring system is right for you and your family can be difficult and confusing, because there are so many choices! Now there is more to think about than "which kind of walkies talkie-esque contraption will work best with the littlest feedback squeal?" Now while it may seem like an information overload right now, here are some things you should definitely consider when you are choosing your next baby monitoring system.

Word of mouth is always a good place to start; what brands would your friends and family recommend? Just as importantly, are there any particular monitors that someone had to discard for some reason? If you want to find out which baby monitors are a good value, asking people you know can be the best place to start. Another advantage to this is that someone may give you one that they no longer use. This would be the best and simplest way to get the baby monitor you want! Remember that when you ask about monitors, you want to know specifics. If someone just tells you something like, "it worked" you won't really be learning anything.

If you are the type of person who may frequently forget to recharge the batteries, or if you want to make sure that the monitor continuously runs, you may find that a system which can last overnight. You might also consider opting for the rechargeable battery option, where you place your receiver on a charging station instead of using one that calls for regular batteries that you change yourself, and you might even try to find a system that lets you plug your receiver into an outlet overnight as a backup system.

There are other considerations, but these are only several that can help you decide on a monitor that's right for you. In the end, the best and easiest way is to just use what is best for you as a basis for decision. Your situation may dictate a long battery life is really important.

The size, strength and extensiveness of the system are all factors that need to be taken into consideration. Since your child is the most important factor in your life right now, you will also want to consider the lifetime expectancy and warranty of the system, that way you know it will work for the period you need it to. The type of monitor you need will depend on you and the needs of your whole family, so it's best to figure out what you want your monitor to do and then go out and find something that will do it!
