Why Retro Bar Stools Will Always Be Fashionable And In Demand

By Katina Flores

A 50s, 60s, or 70s based theme is one of the most popular trends for interior design today. Most people consider a barstool, or two, from this time period an essential element of a retro-style design. This style of stool is a perfect accent piece for the family room or kitchen and it provides fun, functional seating. Actually, retro stools can be used in any room in the house.

Choosing the right bar stools to compliment an authentic-looking 50s, 60s or 70s style interior design requires some careful consideration and comparison shopping. When shopping for the perfect furnishings to complete the look, consumers will need to consider color, style and design, size and construction materials. To achieve the desired appearance, think fun and bold.

When most people think of the time between 1950 and 1980, diner booths, jukeboxes, bean bags, shag carpets, bell bottom jeans and peace signs spring to mind. Most home furnishings from this era featured very distinctive styles and designs. Retro-style furniture is eye-catching, from chrome framed kitchen table sets to fuzzy, colorful wave loungers. Homes decorated with this trendy style are bright and cheery.

Furnishings inspired by the 50s tends to be slightly more traditional and simplistic than furnishings inspired by the 60s or 70s. Yet, a kitchen decorated with a 50s diner theme will complement a house full rooms inspired by the sixties and seventies. Most consumers consider a 50s style bar stool, or two, like those used in the old soda shops, a necessity. Keep ice cream and sodas on hand for nostalgic guests.

Home furnishings inspired by the 60s and 70s typically include vibrant colors and unusual textures. Many are odd shaped, as well. Using contrast is a major part of decorating with a retro-style theme. Strange shapes, bold colors, wild patterns and faux fur are common elements. Many furnishings from the period were made of vinyl, acrylic or plastic. Also, the most popular kitchen table sets featured shiny chrome frames.

Typical retro bar stools might have a bright red, vinyl seat fixed on top of round or square, chrome-legged frames. Many styles have a back for added aesthetics and comfort, as well. Of course, they are available in a variety of eye-catching colors and assorted upholstery fabrics.

Size, or height, must be considered when shopping for the perfect bar stool. The size will be dependent on where the bar stool will be situated. Selecting the proper size, in accordance with the table or counter height, will ensure a great look and provide a comfortable seat for the user. Measuring the surface height of the table, counter or bar is the best way to figure out which bar stool to purchase.

Use the following basic guidelines for purchasing properly sized retro stools. If the surface of the table or counter is 35 to 37 inches from the floor, the top of the seat should be 23 to 28 inches from the floor. If the table top or counter top is 41 to 43 inches from the floor, the seat should be 29 to 32 inches high. Tall tables, counters or bars measuring 44 to 47 inches in height will require seats that measure 33 to 36 inches from the floor.
