Artificial Insemination Has Developed As An Important Procedure

By Jake Bison

Artificial insemination has become a vital intervention and part of the survival process that has faced humanity since time immemorial. When human beings began using tools they began the process of altering things to suit themselves. Departing from the path of natural laws implies benefits but also many hazards. Artificial insemination is one procedure that is countering present problems.

Procedures developed in agriculture to solve problems of infertility prepared the way for procedures that would in time be applied to similar human problems. An infertile bull can cause considerable financial problems if he is relied upon to do what he cannot.

In addition to overcoming infertility problems breeding techniques can be used to vastly enhance a genetic pool of valuable traits in animals. Positive genetic traits such as milk production may be spread from a single bull right through the national herd because semen can be frozen and used economically on thousands of females.

The national socialist beliefs that were prevalent in the twentieth century led to keen interest in breeding procedures. Had Nazis won the Second World War there might have been greater interest in using techniques to spread genetic traits. In fact the emphasis has been more on infertility.

By the mid twentieth century procedures were well established. Sperm could be frozen and stored in improved ways. In cases where females failed to produce eggs banks allowed donors to supply eggs that could be preserved and used. As the post modern period unraveled it became clear that human fertility was waning for uncertain reasons. This stimulated the artificial insemination industry.

Though distinctions between animal and human treatments are nicely preserved the fundamental similarity between human and animal physiology cannot be completely overlooked. In both cases male semen is delicately placed in the reproductive tracts of females. There are discomforts and possible side effects in all cases. However, artificial insemination is a great boon for many couples who have difficulties in conceiving. The joy of having their own children is worth every cent and every moment of unpleasant hormone treatment.
