Photographs, printed media, and artworks are one the best ways of preserving memories and family history. All these pieces when mixed and matched together can transform a simple photo album into a creative and exciting storybook. This storytelling through the use of photos and other craft supplies is called scrapbooking. This activity is one of the hobbies enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

It was during the 15th Century when people began collecting and preserving items for scrapbooking. At that time, said craft is referred to as commonplace books as, instead of photographs, recipes, quotations, letters, poems, and other items unique to the book's creator were compiled in said tomes. At the turn of the 16th Century, commonplace books were more popularly known as friendship albums as the books began containing coats of arms, works commissioned by artisans, and other local memorabilia. Photographs were begun being incorporated in said books at the beginning of the 19th Century, which is also the time when photography became popular.
As was aforementioned, scrapbooking is a craft enjoyed by both kids and adults. However, despite the popularity of said hobby, it is a not very easy task. One should exercise patience and allot time to complete a book. The size and binding of the scrapbook are the first two important things that should be decided before starting said craft. Identifying these properties of the book would allow one to identify the appropriate craft supplies that will be necessary to complete the scrapbook. There are four types of binding scrapbooking hobbyists may choose from. First among these is the post bound. This type of binding features a 12-page book with finished pages loaded into the page protectors from the opening located at the top. Also, this type of binding, which is also considered the most common, is 12-by-12 inches in size.

The second type is the strap hinge which is help together by staples in order to hold the plastic straps in place. Thirdly, we have the three ring album which is quite similar to the post bound but has three ring notebooks which gives one more room to add and remove pages. Book bound is the last type of scrapbook binding which is put together like a standard hardcover book. Binding is glued together in order to secure the page protectors together.

These materials include the scrapbook paper, the embellishments, and the photos. The most common types of scrapbook papers often used for scrapbooking are card stocks and vellum. These supplies may be purchased in a variety of sizes, colors, prints, textures, and patterns. Scrapbook embellishments, on the other hand, include colored fabrics, paints, pompoms, glitters, and bells. All these embellishments can be used to add an artistic value to the scrapbook.
