Getting ready for a Winter baby

By Adam Western

As the winter months draw in the joy of a new baby can be immense. Babies born in the winter months can bring a happy ending to a pregnancy that has survived a hot summer. Winter babies can give the parents the chance to choose traditional baby names such as Gabrielle and Noel.

Spending the last weeks of pregnancy in the cold winter months can be far more pleasant than being heavily pregnant during a hot summer. Mothers to be of winter babies must however remember to eat plenty of healthy foods, get their five a day and take care on slippy paths as a fall in the final stages of pregnancy could be harmful to mother and baby.

When you are choosing suitable baby names for you new arrival the time of year they are born can have a significant effect on the name you choose. Many babies born around the Christmas period will have names that are traditionally associated with Christmas. Many babies born during the winter months will have baby names that give off a warm feeling such a Sherry.

During the last few weeks of pregnancy you will need to buy the essential warm garments that will keep your baby warm. Pushchairs these days come with cosy toes and sheepskin liners that can keep your precious bundle warm on the coldest of days. Car seats can have covers and liners designed to keep babies warm. When using any cover on your car seat remember that the temperature in your car is greater than that outside and it should be removed in the car. Babies can look very cute in an all in one snowsuit which will keep your baby warm whilst allowing you to unzip or unbutton them when you are indoors allowing them to carry on sleeping.

If you are taking your baby out on a cold day then you will need to put a hat on their head to prevent heat loss from their head. When you then go back inside remember to take the hat off so that your baby does not overheat when indoors.

In the latter stages of pregnancy your thoughts will turn to your baby's nursery and making sure that your baby's room is not to cold during the winter is essential. A nursery thermometer should help you keep the room at the right temperature, between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. Remember when your baby is sleeping that they should not get too hot or too cold so make sure that the cot is not positioned too close to any radiators or in a draft from a window.

Babies can now sleep in their very own sleeping bags. Baby sleeping bags come in summer and winter tog ratings and are designed to make sure your baby sleeps safely and at the correct temperature. If you choose to use blankets you should remember that the best approach is to use layers and that a folded blanket will count as 2 blankets.

Pregnancy can be long at the best of times and the expectation of a winter baby can give family and friends something to look forward to as the winter months take effect. A baby's first Christmas can also bring joy to family and friends and they will all love shopping for a special present for the new arrival.
