Before countries have formed into constitutional governments, empires around the world ruled smaller groups of islands. This divide and conquer mentality was evidenced during the time of the Middle Ages. Kings and noble gentry were active participants in the act of war. It is during this time when the use of medieval armor among knights was popularized. It protects them from harm yet slows them down because of its weight.
It is essential to wear a defensive covering such as a helmet on the head. During the thirteenth century, the cervelliere was commonly worn for added protection. It is a skull cap that was is worn under a helmet. Barbutes were the choice headgear in the fifteenth century. It has similar features of the Greek helmet in ancient times. It covers both side of the face with an opening shaped like a T or a Y.

To give protection, neck gears are also provided. Camails are detachable head sleeves made of tiny chain rings. It cover the shoulders and neck and is used together with a bassinet. Another type of protective covering for the neck is the gorget. Wearers should don this protector under a breastplate. It serves as a steel collar that protects the throat.

Arms need to have defensive gears to protect it from harm. Gauntlets and besagew were very common during the era. Gauntlets are metal gloves that protects the fingers and forearms. Besagews, on the other hand, give protection to the armpit and is worn together with gears that do not cover the armpits.

On the chest part, cuirass and culet serves to protect the torso. Cutlets are made up of small lames that are attached to the cuirass. It covers the lower portion of the back and the buttocks. Cuirass are front pieces that cover the chest area. It is usually connected to the back piece.

For added protection, weapons are carried by knights aside from wearing a complete suit of medieval armor. This serves as their offensive and defensive tool for combat. Close-range weapons are swords, flails and daggers. Archery weapons are used for long-range combat.
