Looking round a care home

By Johnnie Rowntree

It's a huge decision, to commit to a care home for either yourself or for a loved one and that's the reason that a lot of thought and research must go into this decision. You have got to know that you are making the right choice before you commit.

It's always a good idea to visit the care homes that you have shortlisted as this can give you a very real idea of what it's like to stay there and you can get a feel for the atmosphere as well as how it's run.

As you visit each care home, you need to have some very specific things in mind to think about, so that you can check that the place suits your needs. One of the first things that you need to think about is the training of the staff. You have to make sure that the staff can meet your needs and requirements and this means considering whether they can cater to any disabilities that you have.

It's also important to think about accessibility. You have to make sure that the care home is in a good location, so that you can still get out to the places you like to go to and also so that friends and family can visit you easily too.

It's important to also think about whether the care home has the right equipment for you. If you need adjustable baths and armchairs as well as support such as handrails, it's essential that you check that these are in place. If you have any special dietary requirements, it's also important that you check that these can be catered to.

When you look around a care home, it's also important that you speak to the staff and the residents so that you can get a real impression of what it would be like to stay in each care home.
