Kids get bigger faster than anybody realizes. In almost no time at all a baby goes from a ball of rapidly dividing cells to the beginnings of a human being with rudimentary lungs, a brain and a pumping heart. It takes only nine months to go from a couple of cells to a being fully capable of living independently. Not too long after that they begin forming personalities and even making their own decisions. You probably already know a few facts about babies, like that they cannot change their own diapers and that they don't yet know how to speak and that it takes them a while to figure out how to move on their own. Read on to learn something new about babies and young kids.
A baby is born with three hundred bones. There are only two hundred and six bones in an adult's body. This makes it sound like the bones disappear but the truth is that many of the bones that are separate at birth fuse together into larger bones as children grow up. Many adults believe that it is the fusing of the bones that causes them to lose their flexibility-they believe that the individual bones gave them better ranges of motions. There is some logic to this-after all, when was the last time you could put your feet behind your head?
This is one of the reasons that babies will sometimes choose one toy over another. This means that all of those black and white decorations that you scoff at (for various reasons) are actually better for your baby's eyes than the pastel and soft colored decorations you were planning to use. All babies know how to hold their breath and how to swim when they are born. This is also something that your baby will rapidly forget as well. Because of this, many early childhood experts recommend that women have water births. Swimming from the womb into life is supposed to make the transition of being born less traumatic for the infant. These experts say that being born into water helps ease the transition of birth and makes it less traumatic than the process they'd face by being born in a "traditional" hospital birth.

Did you know that when babies grow tails? It is absolutely true! As your baby's cells divide, the major organs (heart, lungs, brain) begin to form and so does a tail!
As they mature in the womb the organs inside the baby develop but the tail usually ends up disappearing-the body takes over and the tail disappears up into the body. It is not unlike the way frogs develop from tadpoles. Unfortunately, not everyone's body will absorb the tail completely and some babies are born with short tails still sticking out. From here the parents can choose whether to have the tail removed or to hope that it disappears over time.
