Festival Of Dance In Clare

By Michelle Quinn

An open-air dance extravaganza presenting Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance is to occur from the Cliffs of Moher in September. 10,000 individuals are expected to go to the overall performance on two dates on September 1 and 2 and also the performances are to coincide with the Cliffs of Moher entering the final phase in the worldwide campaign to be picked as one of the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature'.

The show features forty precision performers performing the mythological Irish folk story of a battle between Don Dorcha, the Lord of Darkness, and the Lord of Light, also referred to as the Lord of the Dance. Local musicians Michael O'Connell, Hugh Healy as well as friends with special visitor, folk icon Finbar Furey and also the well-known Kilfenora Ceili Band, will share the climax along with the Lord of the Dance troupe at the Cliffs of Moher.

Announcing details of the event yesterday, Cliffs of Moher sales and marketing director, Geraldine Enright, said the upcoming performances will provide an opportunity for people to witness probably the most talked about entertainment shows being performed at a special Irish location. The Lord of The Dance performances take place less than 2 months before the announcement of the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature'. The Cliffs of Moher has been shortlisted together with twenty-seven other sites worldwide.

Billed as "The Edge Of The World Experience", Oliver O'Connell of MPO Promotions Limited said: "These special, open-air shows can give families a chance to enjoy possibly one of the best exhibits on the planet in comfort close-up to the stage at the legendary Cliffs of Moher."

The Performing Arts are the most productive vehicle for advertising tourism-related products in Ireland, and the advantages for the local economy from this once-in-a-lifetime production are significant. It is envisaged that hotels, guest houses and hostels in the region will be fully occupied and already you will find groups in America and Canada preparing holiday packages in Clare to correspond with this particular iconic event.
