There Is Nothing Quite Like "Oak Furniture"

By Carol Baker

"Oak furniture" is something many people would consider being a true classic. It is timeless, it will fit just about any decor, and when cared for properly can last a lifetime.

Still, some people may find such furnishings to be too expensive for their taste. However, it is very important to understand that furniture is not something to be bought cheaply. Properly made, these investments in value should last a long time, and not exchanged frequently.

There are certain qualities that oak wood has that make it perfectly suited to making such objects. As a hardwood, it is one of the most abundant species in the U. S. What many people may not know is that there are two types of oak, red and white.

The grain itself is fairly similar in either wood, and as many people would predict, the color is distinct and different. What many people may not know is that white oak was once used to build ships due to its special water-resistant quality. Red oak, on the other hand, was frequently used for flooring and to make railroad ties.

There are many reasons for buying such furniture outside of how nice it looks. As mentioned before, it is very durable. Because it is quite heavy it can withstand more wear and tear than other furniture that is crafted from other hardwoods such as mahogany or ebony. The durability of this wood is a very important factor for active families with children or pets because it will not damage easily.

There are several characteristics to look out for when buying such furniture. The biggest thing to remember when buying it is to know whether it is made from solid oak or veneers. The difference between the two being that veneers are used as accents on furniture, and this means that the underlying structure could be made from a different material.

It will have no scratches, marks, or indentations and the finish of the wood will always be perfectly smooth and level. It is also important to always make sure that the finish is not obscuring the beautiful natural grain of the wood itself.

What is vital to keep in mind is that with any long term purchase, quality needs to outweigh price considerations, and this is doubly true in regards to oak furniture. These beautiful pieces can be well suited to any style, whether it be period, classic, or modern. With proper care, these pieces can transform into family heirlooms and last for several generations.
