How It Works: Plumbing System

By Carol Henderson

Plumbing refers to a system of fixtures, pipes, tanks, fittings, tubing and other devices needed for heating, sanitation and supply of water. This is an important system in any developed country because it ensures the safety and sanitation of individuals. These systems are built to service a single facility.

Plumbing has been around for hundreds of years. Historically, individuals used the streets and rivers as places for waste disposal. During the nineteenth century, it was in demand. Today, it is ever-present.

Professional workers who are learned in the repair and installation of these systems are known as plumbers. Advances in technology have benefited this industry. New equipment has simplified diagnosis and restoration procedures. Control systems, video cameras, gauges, pumps, water softeners, water heaters and heat exchangers are just some of the equipment used in the practice.

These systems have evolved over time. No longer do they rely on gravity to move water. Instead, high-pressure pumps are installed. Originally piping was made from clay, stone, wood or lead. Today, pipes are constructed with non-toxic materials, usually plastics or metals. Pipes, tubes, fittings, valves and fixtures are the primary components of the system.

At some point, system repair may be necessary. Problems with faucets are usually repairable by replacing units. Flushing problems, flooded bathrooms, running toilet water and slow drainage are common symptoms of toilet problems such as float displacement, clogging and toilet running. Shower and bath fixtures are often stricken with foul odors, blocked drains, leaks, and water temperature fluctuations. Other issues may include: rattling, creaking, or whistling of pipes; corrosion of pipes; and gas leaks.

Searching for a plumber should start by looking through an online business directory, local phone book or seeking recommendations from family and friends. Do adequate research on a company before hiring them. Take prices and customer reviews into consideration. Keep in mind that not all repairs require professional help. They may be quick fixes.
