AC Repair: Signs Your Unit Needs Help

By John Hill

The hotter the summer, the more aware you become of your air conditioning. As the temperatures climb, you may be noticing that your air conditioning system is not working as well as it should be. If your system isn't performing like it should be, there's no need to sweat. This can be not only uncomfortable but dangerous in hot climates, especially for infants and the elderly. Air conditioning technicians can evaluate the condition of your system and determine what is causing it to underperform. Here are some common problems that technicians often find when they look at a system:

Obstructed Vents- If the vents that draw warm air out of your house are obstructed by furniture or other objects, the air flow will be affected. Reduced air flow will make your system work harder for every degree of cooling and keep your home from cooling to a comfortable temperature. Ever if you are staying cool, you could be paying too much for your air conditioning bill if your vents are obstructed.

Blocked A/C Unit- Obstructed vents may seem obvious but not all air flow take place inside your home. Since units are normally on the ground against the side of the house, it's easy for debris to build up around them. The warm air needs to be disbursed to the outside and the outdoor vents on your A/C unit can become blocked by dirt and leaves. Once again, if the air flow is obstructed by this build up, your system will run warmer and less efficiently (more expensively) than necessary.

Leaking Windows and Doors- Although not part of the actual system, windows and doors are critical in keeping the warm air out and cool air in. If your home doesn't seal well, your air conditioning is just recalculating the warm air that continues to seep in. Many air conditioning technicians will have methods for checking the sealing of windows and doors. You can also do an easy self check with your hand - or a tissue - to see if there is a draft coming around your window or door frames.

Outdated System- There comes a time when your air conditioning unit just needs to be replaced. Although this seems expensive, a more efficient system can actually pay for itself in energy savings very quickly. This is also an important step when you are putting a system in a new home. Imagine paying less and staying cooler! Check out the ratings on each unit to decide what will be most efficient for your home and climate.
