What to Look For When Buying Baby Pushchairs

By Ann Krall

There are so many things to consider when it comes time to buying your new baby's pushchair. Safety is always our main concern but you need to take the feel of the materials and the smoothness of the ride into consideration too. Today, we can easily find baby strollers (pushchairs) that will do fairly well in the areas we mentioned earlier. Strollers and pushchairs have come a long way since we were children ourselves.

The first step is to read reviews from credible sources. You can easily find reviews done by people who aren't making any money from referring you, usually they give the most unbiased reviews.

If your friends have kids, ask them about strollers. Your needs will not be exactly the same as someone else's, but you can at least get some basic information about various strollers this way. While you are talking to them, find out why exactly they chose the stroller they did, and what other ones they considered. Find out why they decided against the other strollers they looked at. If you have a certain pushchair in mind, ask people you know whether any of them has used it and if so what they thought of it. Other parents can be gold mines of information! You must check the pushchair's brake ratings. Isn't your baby's safety worth a two minute internet search on the product's brake quality? You want one that has a good brake system in place so that you can easily park your stroller without having to worry about it being pushed away by heavy winds or accidentally rolling too fast down an incline. Brakes should be easy to engage and disengage, for your convenience. You don't want to have to go through a whole rigmarole every time you want to set the brakes but you also don't want them to be so easy to operate that they wear out easily. You are going to be using the braking system a lot so give them a quick test before you purchase.

How much space do you need? A lot of people don't really think about how baby pushchairs will begin to collect various things whenever they are pushing it. You should look for chairs that have extra space for things like your diaper bags and small items that you might be picking up while you are out of the house. Pushing a stroller around isn't pleasant if you're dealing with a bunch of bags hanging off your arms. This is an even bigger issue if you have more than one child in the stroller. Be sure and look into strollers big enough for more than one child!

Weight is another deciding factor. This is something that you definitely want to consider as you are shopping. You need to determine a suitable balance between too heavy and too light. At times, babies can stir around, kick, shift, and move a lot, causing a stroller to tip over, a heavier stroller will prevent this from happening. You also want it to be light enough that you can push it without putting all of your body weight behind it. So, when shopping for a heavy stroller, always remember that it does not have to be so heavy that it prevents you from using it. First, you need a checklist of the options that will better serve your purposes. One parent might have twins while another needs something that is designed to be easily pushed by a smaller person. Ask yourself questions to determine which criteria are the most important to you before you begin shopping. With a short checklist and a little research you can make a very smart purchase.
