Helpful Parenting Tips: How to Childproof your Home Your Pool

By Kaela Smith

Thousands of children all around America end up in hospitals daily. One of the main causes is drowning, and a good percentage of these drowned in their backyard pool.

A pool is definitely a nice addition to a home, but it is also dangerous if parents are not careful. So, how can parents childproof their pool?

Use a pool fence. We're not talking about cheap perimeter yard fencing, but high-quality pool fences. These should be at least four feet high and the gaps shouldn't be wider than three inches. Also choose one with no spaces underneath that a child can crawl through.

In addition to a fence, use pool covers for good measure. Buy the motorized one which is available in almost all pool supply companies. Be sure not to let any amount of water pool over the cover, as even this could pose danger to your child.

For homes with above-ground pool, make sure to lock up the ladder when the pool is not in use. Better yet, remove it.

Add safety latches to doors and windows leading to the swimming pool area. These are available online for a low price. Just makes sure that you practice closing the latches or else they would not be effective. When you have people over, make sure that they aware about the latches so they could also practice using them every time they have to go through the door.

Alarms are also effective. You can buy special pool alarms which set off when it detects underwater movements. These generally cost around $100 to $200 at most. Some companies also sell alarms wristbands that go off when it gets wet although I don't think they are as effective as real pool alarms.

Of course, you can always choose to make your child learn how to swim. Some schools offer special programs where children as young as six months old are taught to roll over in the water and float. Older children are taught a series of swimming movements and floating so they can reach the edge of the pool and hold on or climb out.
