Taking An Expectant Mother's Portrait

By Kate Calvin

Put the blame on Demi Moore. The fad on maternity photography started when the A-list star posed nude while seven months along on her pregnancy on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991. Needless to say, pregnant mothers have been doing it for a long time before then, only they were fully clothed, but it was just after Demi proudly showed off her really pregnant nude figure that the trend intensified. Even two decades later, pregnant women around the globe continue to pose with their stuffed tummy, with or without clothes, for a pre-motherhood photograph.

Maternity photography is truly special not just to the moms but also to the future dads. The photography shoot hopes to capture the significant changes on a woman's body and her emotions while anticipating the arrival of her baby. These transitions and emotions are not reproducible, which is why it is best to capture them during pregnancy period. To further put emphasis on the pregnancy, it is also recommended that the mother is at least six months pregnant when her tummy is already big.

Even though maternity picture customarilly means the mother's solo photo, the rising trend these days is to include the dad. The idea is to catch both parents' tender feelings and thrilling expectations in the photo. If you like to include your other half in the picture, you can elect whether you like to show a loving image or exhibit both your fun side and talk about the treatment with the photographer.

Holding the pictorial shoot inside the photographer's studio is perfect for a lot of parents because it requires less expenditure and they can also manipulate the lighting more for a softer look. Some couples, however, would like to hold the session where they had their pre-wedding photography so the new pictorial can kind of help continue their story. Relaxing locations like the beach or a garden are also well-liked options, but if you like you can hold yours in your home.

Thanks to Demi, mothers are now contemplating what they must wear in the pictorial shoot or if they should wear anything at all. While naked pregnancy shots look inventive and bold, it is also quite common now. Still, go ahead and take a nude shot if you have the courage and will to do so. But remember to choose a reputable photographer who has experience in classy nude photography and discuss it with him first to prepare for the session.

If you like to hang on to your clothes, it is best to wear something snug and stretchy to emphasize your tummy. You can dress in jeans or a flowy skirt, but for the blouse, the focus should remain on your pregnancy bulge. You can also show off a bare belly in your portrait to further put emphasis on the change in your body.
