Making Time For Me

By Sigita Kim

How important is Me Time? I think it is extremely important. Nothing really prepares you for how much life changes after you have a child. No matter how much you love your children and how thankful you are for being a parent it is still important that you get some Me Time. We all need to recharge our batteries and for even those who do get a good sleep this can still not be enough. I have listed a few things that I try and take time out to do. I do not have a routine as such due to the unpredictability that is parenting. However I try and make simple tasks my time opportunities.

Going to Work Absolutely mad idea but true. I never wanted to go back to work after having children but as the highest earner in the house I had little choice. However when I leave for work I have 1 hours commuting time to listen to what I want to listen to, I then have 2 breaks a day where I get to finish my meal without having to get up a number of times. I also get to be someone else other than Mum.
Doing the Housework. I can lock myself in the bathroom and spend 30-60 minutes cleaning with just my own thoughts whilst my husband looks after the children. I also like hoovering, polishing, dusting and tidying upstairs for a bit of peace and quiet.

The Evening When you children are young and they go to bed early evening it means you have time to catch up. Lose yourself in Music, Playing an Instrument, watching tv or reading a book or magazine. I love to sit down with a cuppa coffee and watch Emmerdale.

If she had been labelled as a dancer and nothing else, it might have been quite difficult for her. After all if she is no longer that "thing" then who or what is she? At the end of the day we are not the things we do. We are so much more than that. We are these amazing creations of God. So in raising our kids it is a good idea to remind them of who they truly are and celebrate all those wonderful components, qualities and gifts they have been blessed with.

Let him organize a family activity once a month: Give the new daddy the job of organizing one family activity a month. Often we think we know what our family should be doing and we'll tend to follow our mommy crowds in doing activities that bring us closer to similar social circles. Although this is great, daddy may have something he wants to share with his new child. Give him the opportunity to organize a full day's events while you sit back and enjoy your day.

Being a new mother is nerve-wracking and stressful. We tend to monopolize the child rearing often leaving daddy in the dust. Unfortunately this leaves daddy feeling like a distant participant in this new game! Involve him more, provide him with much more of his own responsibility and give him the tools and the freedom to make his own judgments. By taking the time to actively employ him in his new role, you will not only have a better relationship with your child's father, but he will have the opportunity to enjoy his new role as much as you do.
