The Different Diets Our Doctors May Prescribe for Us

"Okay Mr. Jones, for now I want you to take it very easy. Just go on a soft diet for a couple of days."

On a soft diet? This has happened to me too many times. My doctor telling me to go on this particular diet, when in truth I don't really understand what he means exactly by that. I was also too shy to bug him about the specifics. So here I have gathered a list of the common diets our doctors may prescribe to us. Especially if we are in the hospital, we may find that some these may be prescribed:

1. The clear liquid diet. -This is for short-term use. Aside from the obvious "clear" liquid, this also includes food that are liquid when at body temperature. -Included: clear broth, gelatin, popsicles, apple juice -Not included: milk, fruit juices with pulp
2. The full liquid diet -Can be for short-term or long-term use. Note that a liquid supplement like Ensure is usually necessary if you are to be on a full liquid diet for longer than 3 days. Aside from clear liquids, opaque liquids are included in this diet. -Included: milk, strained soups, strained vegetable juice

3. The soft diet -When you have trouble chewing and/or swallowing -Included: foods that usually have a soft texture -Not included: nuts, fried food, whole grains

4. The high-fiber diet -To help with constipation, obesity, high cholesterol levels. Drink lots of water and introduce fiber to your system gradually to avoid diarrhea. -Included: fruits and vegetables. Whole grains such as brown rice and rolled oats.

5. The sodium-restricted diet -To help with high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease -Included: fresh foods! Bay leaves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger may be used (instead of salt) for flavoring your food. -Not included: processed foods in general. Instant noodles, potato chips, french fries, canned food such as Spam.

6. The high-iron diet -For people who are anemic. -Included: clams, liver, meat, spinach. Vitamin C-rich food such as oranges would help with iron absorption -Not included: white rice or tea. Take note that milk can interfere with iron absorption.

Please take note that what I have written should never be a
